If you’re looking for the best sound quality you can get in a pair of noise-cancelling headphones, we recommend the AirPods Max. The headphones pair seamlessly with other Apple devices and sound great, especially in combination with Apple’s Spatial Audio feature, which enables a more immersive experience when listening to or watching compatible content. They also tout the best transparency mode of any headset on our list, and boast incredible build quality thanks to a luxurious design that opts for aluminum, steel, and fabric over plastic.
At an MSRP of $549, the AirPods Max can be quite expensive, but many retailers have been discounting them lately.

Bose QuietComfort 45s, our pick for the most comfortable noise-cancelling headphones, are a pair that frequent travelers are sure to appreciate. They’re lightweight and foldable, so you can easily take them with you and you’re unlikely to tire your ears, thanks to their oval ear cups. Battery life is now 24 hours too, meaning you don’t have to worry about constantly having to charge them. Meanwhile, the new transparency mode is useful when you need to be more aware of your surroundings, such as when you’re about to cross the street, while a firmware update introduced earlier this year allows you to customize the bass, midrange, and other aspects of the EQ. USB-C equipped headphones don’t offer the same bass response as Sony’s 1000XM4, but if it’s comfort you’re after, the QC45 more than delivers.
$329
The Bose QuietComfort 45 Headphones update the company’s popular ultra-comfortable design with USB-C, improved noise cancellation and longer battery life.
If you’re a non-Apple user looking for a great-sounding pair of noise-cancelling headphones, Sennheiser’s Momentum Wireless 3 is your best bet. We found them to feature detailed, bass-rich sound, a stylish retro-inspired design, and to be extremely comfortable to wear, even when wearing glasses. Although their noise cancellation may not compete with other models on our list, they make up for it with convenient software features like ambience stepping and a customizable equalizer. Also, unlike many other earbuds, they integrate with the location-tracking device, Tile.
$249.98
Sennheiser’s premium noise-cancelling headphones offer lush comfort, rich sound with plenty of bass, and timeless design.
$299.99
Marshall’s noise-canceling headphones stand out with their unique looks and easy-to-use joystick to control your music. They are also battery life champions with up to 45 hours of playback.

Multitaskers will appreciate the Surface Headphones 2 from Microsoft, as they offer excellent multipoint Bluetooth support, allowing you to pair them with multiple devices and switch between them with ease. The headphones also offer intuitive dial controls for volume and noise cancellation, as well as better sound quality and battery life compared to its predecessor. While Microsoft’s noise-canceling technology isn’t as effective as Bose and Sony’s, Surface Headphones 2 still adequately silence outside noises so you can focus.
During Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Microsoft’s Surface Headphones 2 dropped to around $162, which is almost half of its usual $249.99 retail price.
$199.99
Microsoft’s Surface Headphones 2 have the same intuitive dial controls as the original for volume and noise cancellation, but the sequel offers better sound quality and battery life at a cheaper price.
If the newer QuietComfort 45s are out of your budget, their noise-canceling predecessor is still a great affordable alternative, at least where they can be found. Like newer Bose models, the discontinued QuietComfort 35 II headphones are comfortable and lightweight. They also come with a number of commendable features, including good sound quality and the ability to seamlessly switch between two paired devices.
While the original sticker price was $349, the QC35 II is frequently on sale for much less.

While we can’t recommend them to anyone outside of the Apple ecosystem, the Beats Studio 3 Wireless could be a decent alternative if you want a pair of Apple headphones but find the AirPods Max too expensive. Beats Studio 3 is comfortable to wear, folds in for easy storage, and features Apple’s next-generation W1 wireless chip, which still lets you quickly connect and switch between Apple devices. Note, however, that unlike those built with Apple’s newer H1 chip, the earbuds lack hands-free Siri support. They also charge through a Micro USB port instead of a Lightning or USB-C port.
$199.95
Beats Studio 3 features Apple’s W1 wireless chip, allowing them to quickly connect and switch between any Apple devices you may have. The wireless over-ear headphones connect via Bluetooth and also support 3.5mm for a wired connection.
